PNG to DXF – Convert an Image to CAD Vector

PNG traces to DXF noticeably better than JPG does, because PNG is lossless and has no compression artefacts for the tracer to mistake for real edges. If you have a choice of source file, always trace from the PNG. This guide covers the free tracing route and the settings that produce a DXF clean enough to cut from.

PNG to DXF vector tracing – ExamFo
PNG to DXF converter guide

Can this be done in the browser?

Not directly. DXF is a vector CAD format, so the PNG must be traced into paths first — a job for Inkscape (free) rather than a browser image tool. ExamFo can clean and resize the PNG beforehand, which makes a large difference to how clean the trace comes out.

How to PNG to DXF Step by Step

  1. Start with a clean PNG: Ideally black shapes on a white background with no gradients or shadows.
  2. Raise the contrast: Anything grey confuses the tracer. Push it to pure black and pure white if you can.
  3. Open Inkscape and import the PNG: File → Import, then Path → Trace Bitmap.
  4. Choose the trace mode: Brightness Cutoff for silhouettes and line art, Edge Detection for outlines only. Adjust the threshold while watching the live preview.
  5. Simplify the paths: Select the traced object and press Ctrl+L once or twice to remove excess nodes — CNC machines cut smoother with fewer nodes.
  6. Save as DXF: File → Save As → Desktop Cutting Plotter (AutoCAD DXF R14), with units set to mm.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is PNG better than JPG for DXF conversion?

Yes, clearly. PNG is lossless so the tracer sees genuine edges, while JPG compression artefacts get traced as fake extra lines.

How do I reduce the number of nodes in the DXF?

Select the traced path in Inkscape and press Ctrl+L to simplify. Repeat once if needed, but check the shape does not distort.

Why is my traced outline doubled?

Brightness Cutoff traces both the inside and outside edge of a line. Use Edge Detection, or trace a filled silhouette instead of an outline drawing.

What DXF version should I save as?

R12 or R14. They are the most widely compatible, and almost every CNC controller and CAD program reads them.

Does ExamFo convert PNG to DXF?

No — that requires vector tracing software. ExamFo prepares the image so the trace is clean.
